On February 26, 1991, coalition forces drove the last Iraqi troops out of Kuwait. Saddam Hussein was determined that if he couldn’t capture the oil fields for his own enrichment, then no one would. He ordered the oil wells set ablaze by retreating troops, resulting in scores of oil well conflagrations and an environmental disaster. It took months for global firefighting experts to extinguish the last of the oil fires.
